Why we started EMRGED

Finding good independent talent is hard.

Luke and I both work in the creative industries, and we kept running into the same problem:

Finding good independent talent is hard.

The people are out there — models, creators and interesting individuals doing brilliant work — but actually finding them can mean hours of searching Instagram, asking around, digging through portfolios or going back to the same familiar faces.

And even then, you’re often only seeing the people who already know how to be visible.

We knew there had to be more out there.

People with the right look, energy, experience or point of view who simply weren’t represented, weren’t in the right circles, or hadn’t been discovered yet.

That was really the starting point for EMRGED.

We wanted to create one considered place where brands, photographers, studios and production teams could discover great independent talent they might never otherwise come across.

More than somewhere to be seen

As the idea developed, it became about more than making talent easier to find.

We also wanted the people on the other side of that search to have more control.

Control over how they present themselves. Control over who they speak to. Control over the projects they take on and the ones they choose to leave behind.

An opportunity isn’t automatically a good opportunity.

The people you work with, the brands you stand beside and the work you put into the world all become part of your story.

We didn't want to build another casting agency

EMRGED sits somewhere different.

We aren’t here to represent talent, decide who gets put forward, negotiate on their behalf or take a percentage every time they work.

We want to make the connection easier.

For brands, photographers, production teams and creative studios, that means being able to explore a hand-selected network of talent, build a shortlist and reach out directly.

For the people on EMRGED, it means having another way into the room — without handing over control once they get there.

You don't necessarily need an agent. You don't need tens of thousands of followers. And you don't need to have already worked for every brand someone recognises.

You need something to bring.

Individuality. Presence. Experience. Potential. A point of view.

Why curated matters

We knew from the beginning that we didn’t want EMRGED to become an enormous talent directory filled with thousands of interchangeable profiles.

More isn’t always more useful.

Curation makes the platform better for everyone using it.

The people searching know there is quality standard being upheld. And the people who join aren’t disappearing into an endless database.

It also gives us room to build a network with real depth — different ages, backgrounds, bodies, styles, experiences and kinds of talent.

People at different stages of their careers.

People who have done this for years and people who are just beginning.

People who might never have found themselves in the same room otherwise.

The strength of EMRGED won’t come from how many profiles we have. It will come from the people within it.

Starting small, deliberately

We’re beginning with independent talent across the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Not because EMRGED is supposed to stay local, but because we want to build something useful before we build something big.

A strong community of interesting people. Enough depth for someone casting a campaign, shoot or project to genuinely find who they’re looking for. And enough opportunities moving through it that being part of EMRGED actually means something.

From there, the ambition is much larger.

Sydney. Melbourne. Other cities. Eventually, wherever good work is being made and interesting people are looking for a way into it.

But we’d rather earn that growth than manufacture it.

What we hope it becomes

EMRGED started because finding good independent talent was harder than it should be. But what excites us most is what can grow around that.

A community of independent people who are easier to discover, more connected to opportunity, and still completely in control of the work they choose to do.

A place where being independent doesn't have to mean doing everything alone.

Where people can build experience, create work they’re proud of, meet the right collaborators and grow alongside one another.

Where success for one person adds energy to the whole community.

Because the more good people we bring together, the more useful EMRGED becomes for everyone in it.

For the talent.

For the people making the work.

And for the next person who hasn't been found yet.

That’s what we’re building.
